Gray Ritter Graham attorneys Steve Woodley, Don Downing, Joan Lockwood and Tom Neill were recognized with 2012 Missouri Lawyers Weekly Awards for their 2011 courtroom achievements. Downing was the recipient of the Top Plaintiff Win for 2011 for his role as co-lead negotiator in last July’s $750 million settlement with Bayer Cropscience on behalf of U.S. rice farmers. Woodley, Lockwood and Neill received the Appellate Advocate Award for their successful appeal before the Missouri Supreme Court in the matter of Kivland v. Columbia Orthopedic Group and Robert Gaines. The appeal overturned two lower courts’ rulings in the wrongful death lawsuit in which a man killed himself following an allegedly negligent back surgery that left him paralyzed. The GRG attorneys argued that his suicide was clearly caused by the negligent surgery and, in the pursuit of justice, it wasn’t reasonable that insanity be considered, which was the previous standard in similar cases.
